Oakville - The Oakville Hornets Girls Hockey Association is pleased to announce that it has received $84,600 in capital and operating funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to facilitate the out-fitting and staffing of a new central office that will serve as the new home of the Hornets in the Town of Oakville.
"The Ontario Trillium Foundation has again chosen an exceptional organization, the Oakville Hornets Girls Hockey Association," said Kevin Flynn, MPP, Oakville. "Through the financial assistance of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Oakville Hornets Girls Hockey Association will continue to grow and provide opportunities for young women in our community to participate in hockey programs. This type of programming is in line with the McGuinty government's plan to get more people active and build a healthier province."
For all of its 10 years of operation, the Oakville Hornets have been a decentrally-run organization, with the public face of girls' hockey in the community being the Association's post office box. Through the financial assistance of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Oakville Hornets and its 840 female hockey players, their parents and 270 dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers, will soon be provided within a centrally-located, accessible and functional office.
Located in the Joshua's Creek Arena, the funds provided by the Ontario Trillium Foundation will ensure that the office is appropriately outfitted with office furniture, centralized document storage facilities and office equipment. In addition, these funds will also be used to create a part-time office administrator position, whose duties will include overseeing certain administrative aspects of the Association, staffing the new office, liaising with the general public, answering questions and assisting the volunteer Board in such matters as scheduling and player registrations. The operating portion of the grant will cover a three-year period.
"We are extremely pleased and grateful for the financial assistance provided by the Ontario Trillium Foundation," said John Burgess, President of the Oakville Hornets. "These funds will allow us to better serve the residents of Oakville and in particular young women who enjoy and want to participate in the great sport of hockey."
The Oakville Hornets Girls Hockey Association is a voluntary association of members and individuals designed to promote and foster female hockey programs and participation in the Town of Oakville.
The mission of OHGHA is four-fold: 1) to promote and develop female youth hockey; 2) to provide members of the association with the opportunity to enjoy hockey competition and related activities throughout the year; 3) to develop and encourage good citizenship, integrity and honesty, fun, fair play, equity and excellence; and 4) to foster and improve hockey recreation for all players, regardless of ability.
Since 2000, the Oakville Hornets have experienced phenomenal growth in registration of some 25% per year, growing from 400 registered players at that time to some 840 players today.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Ministry of Culture, receives annually $100 million of government funding generated through Ontario's charity casino initiative.
